چکیده

mon name “razor clam”. They gain that moniker due to their overall shape of being long and thin, in the nature of an old-time straight razor. Many species of razor clams are favorably recognized for their taste and texture and have been commercially harvested throughout the world. More recently, interest has been rising about developing methods to farm razor clams. It is important to understand key aspects of the clam’s basic biology and natural history before one can start to grow them successfully under controlled conditions. One species that has been identified as having high potential for aquaculture is the Atlantic jack knife or American razor clam, Ensis directus (Figure 1, also identified as Ensis americanus in Europe). A native of the Atlantic seaboard of North America, the Razor clam ranges from Labrador to South Carolina. Our knowledge of this razor clam is somewhat enigmatic given that the bulk of the information on E. directus in North America was published during the turn of the 20th century. The majority of recent information about the razor clam has been published as studies of E. americanus, following its introduction into waters of the German Bight in 1978. Since that introduction, the clam has spread through the North Sea coastline from the English Channel to Sweden and has become a dominant bivalve species in the intertidal areas within that range. Localized fluidization burrowing mechanics of Ensis directus.

Muscle measurements of Ensis directus, the Atlantic razor clam, indicate that the organism only has sufficient strength to burrow a few centimeters into the soil, yet razor clams burrow to over 70 cm. In this paper, we show that the animal uses the motions of its valves to locally fluidize the surrounding soil and reduce burrowing drag. Substrate deformations were measured using particle image ...

Identification and evaluation of the Atlantic razor clam (Ensis directus) for biologically inspired subsea burrowing systems.

In this article, we identify and analyze a subsea organism to serve as a model for biologically inspired burrowing technology to be used in applications such as anchoring, installation of cables, and recovery of oil. After inspecting myriad forms of life that live on or within ocean substrates, the Atlantic razor clam, Ensis directis, stood out as an attractive basis for new burrowing technolog...

Analysis of ITS1 and ITS2 sequences in Ensis razor shells: suitability as molecular markers at the population and species levels, and evolution of these ribosomal DNA spacers.

Internal transcribed spacer 1 and 2 (ITS1 and ITS2) sequences were analysed in Ensis razor shells (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Pharidae). We aimed to (1) test ITS1 and ITS2 as molecular markers at the population level in the successful alien E. directus (Conrad, 1843); (2) test these spacers at the species level in E. directus and three other Ensis species, E. siliqua (L., 1758), E. macha (Molina, 1782...

Morphological characterization via light and electron microscopy of Atlantic jackknife clam (Ensis directus) hemocytes.

The Atlantic jackknife clam, Ensis directus, is currently being researched as a potential species for aquaculture operations in Maine. The goal of this study was to describe the hemocytes of this species for the first time and provide a morphological classification scheme. We viewed hemocytes under light microscopy (using Hemacolor, neutral red, and Pappenheim's stains) as well as transmission ...
